When a shell is subjected to external pressure its internal volume decreases due to compression. But at certain pressure the volume decreases significantly in an instant when the pressure doesn’t increase significantly. This is called collapse or buckling of shell. The goal of our experiment is to determine the buckling pressure of PVC pipes from external pressure versus volume change graph. To study collapsing pressure 3inch PVC pipes were used
To find the volume change a setup was made so that the water output could be collected outside the setup in a measuring cylinder. With the water in the cylinder the volume change inside the experimental PVC setup was determined while pressure gauge reading gave the corresponding external pressure.
As far as impact tests of PVC pipes are concerned, some tests were run to determine the impact strength of PVC pipe and to compare the results found from different methods of experiment.
